The Full Story

This one was a milestone, Valhalla's first new construction install. The homeowner was building a custom place out on the Paola outskirts, the kind of property where the lot ends in tree lines and barbed wire and the wind has nothing to slow it down before it hits the side of the house. He'd been given the option to pick his own subs on the build instead of running everything through the GC, and he found us on Angi's.

The doors were a pair of DoorLink 3700 Ozarks in Walnut, an 18x8 on the main bay and a 9x8 on the side. The Ozark series is DoorLink's wood-grain plank finish doors. Good match for the custom build.

The wind load on these is what made the job notable. The location calls for serious wind rating, and we built these out to the maximum DoorLink will rate, almost two 3-inch struts per section at the highest gauge they offer. The DoorLink rep told me they don't even wind-load that high for Florida specs. So this customer's got hurricane-coast-grade doors sitting in eastern Kansas, which is overkill in the best way. Those doors aren't going anywhere when a Kansas storm comes through.

For the openers, the homeowner was already leaning wall-mount because he understood the weight he was about to be hanging on standard ceiling units. I confirmed that was the right call and went with LiftMaster 8900s their elite-series jackshaft, mounted next to the door on the torsion bar instead of overhead. Quieter, ceiling stays clear for storage, and the motor has actual leverage instead of fighting the door from the top.

Openings were ready when the doors arrived. We got both doors hung, the wall-mounts mounted, and everything dialed in the same day.

After, the grand reveal

As you can see from the support struts on the backs of these doors the windload was extremely high, just look at the beefy springs above the door.

After, the grand reveal

Our customer was extremely happy to have picked these beautiful doors. They almost went with a stacked vertical glass style but they chose maximum windload as the priority and the doors turned out stunning.
